Everchanging Technology Works cited missing While first considering how to go about completing this assignment, I tried to keep in mind the one constant characteristic of technology: it is always changing. Technology seems to change faster than most can keep pace with. Even simple tasks like writing letters has changed dramatically over the past few decades. Twenty years ago, the postal system was the most common way for people to communicate through writing. Now people use e-mail, allowing them to communicate with anyone in the world at the click of a mouse. Other activities associated with writing have also made a shift to computers, condemning devices like the typewriter and the pencil to relative obscurity. The fact that technology is always changing and that things that were once thought of as conveniences can quickly become outdated became my inspiration for this assignment. One can think of past technologies like the typewriter as being left behind to wither and die, which is why I chose to use a watermelon as my canvas to write on. The watermelon perfectly represents the "life span" of technology. When you buy a watermelon, as with any perishable item, you know that it has a limited shelf life before it rots and becomes unusable. Technology can be thought of in the same way, even though the process takes a longer period of time. Take the CD for example. In the 1980s, compact disks became preferable to vinyl records by most consumers because of better sound quality and overall convenience. Now that mp3 technology is beginning to expand, it seems that CDs might soon become obsolete. My goal for the assignment was to stay as close to using all "natural" materials as possible and although I got the watermelon from a grocery store, I think that I accomplished that objective. Besides the watermelon the only other object I used was a sharp rock that I found outside my apartment. I used the rock to carve "all technology will rot someday" into the melon. I feel that statement illustrates the point that I am trying to make about the relationship between writing and technology. One of the criteria for this assignment was the permanence of what we created. But because technology does not seem to have any permanence itself (especially when applied to writing technology), I decided to focus more on the use of natural materials and the creative aspect of the project. Family Diversity Essay

The nuclear family is portrayed as the perfect family on most advertising. The ‘cereal packet’ family, dad, mum and two kids all perfectly bronzed and all smiles usually seen on TV adverts. Rapoport and Rapoport would suggest that this is not the case any longer due to increased family diversity. They identified five different types of family diversity in Britain. Organisational diversity refers to division of labour within the family and differences in the ways family roles are organised. Cultural diversity is diversity due to religious and ethnic influences. Social class diversity- there is differences between working and middle classes in terms of adult relationships, the socialisation of children etc. Life course diversity, as different stages in the life cycle will generate different patterns of structure e. g. newly weds have a different structure and life style to those with children. Cohort diversity refers to specific times in the past which could have had an effect on the family structure. Eversley and Bonnerjea identified six types of regional diversity. The ‘sunbelt’ – the affluent south with higher class two parent families. The ‘geriatric wards’ – coastal areas with retired couples. The old declining industrial areas of the north- traditional extended family structures. The inner city- single parent families and ethnic minorities. The newly declining industrial areas of the Midlands- dominated by diverse structures. Rural areas- typified by extended families. The New Right are not happy with the increase in family diversity seen above as they believe there is only one correct family which is the patriarchal nuclear family with a clear cut division of labour between instrumental (males) and expressive (females) roles. They see this family as natural and based on fundamental biological differences. The New Right argue that the increase in family diversity is the cause of lots of social problems such as higher crime rates and educational failure. They argue that family breakdown (where the family is no longer a patriarchal nuclear family) increases the risks to children.

Romantic Era The romantic is given the date of 1798 as its official beginning. The romantic era was known for its connection to nature in the authors writing. They always bring up emotion of some kind. They are sometimes also epic type that depict a hero and a struggle of some kind. They are usually somewhat lengthy and have a beginning, middle and an end. There has been evidence that some writers could be called romantics even before the period is said to have begun. Two writers that fit this mold are William Collins and Thomas Gray, who wrote just before the romantic era started. Thomas Gray was said to have written to the common people in his works. He didnt use the english language of that time, but instead used an archaic and distorted type of meaning. Thomas Gray wrote a piece called Elegy in a Country Churchyard and this does have some romantic writer characteristics. This starts off very dark and is talking about death. In line 15 he says Each in his narrow cell forever laid which refers to the coffin and being buried in a grave. Death is a part of nature and romantics would try to make a connection to humanity. Death also brings up sadness over the person who has died, which is another romantic characteristic. Stanzas 10-15 go on to talk about those who have died, but received no notice in their life or death. The speaker says that many people go on unnoticed in life like a desert flower that has waste its sweetness on the desert air This is connecting to nature once again. These type of stanzas are also trying to make the reader feel sorry for the speaker. He goes on to further describe the situation for the dead and still takes pity on them and wants the reader to do the same. At the end he ends the poem with what can be seen as the end of someones time on earth, the epitaph of a gravestone. William Collins wrote a lot of odes in his time. They were said to personify his emotions such as pity, fear, etc. His odes reflect nature in the title sometimes, like Ode to an Evening. Collins is referring to a farmer or a sheepherder that has finished the day and is now ready to rest before the next day. He is also making some kind of a plea to nature. He is saying that he wants to learn from nature Now teach me, maid composed, to breate some softened strain, this draws more of connection to nature and humanity. The speaker sounds like he is asking nature to teach him. He says he loves when the morning star comes around again to start the work day over again Thy genial loved return! For when thy folding-star arising shows his paly circlet, at his warning lamp. This line shows that he relies on nature to tell him when to herd the sheep before it gets to late in the day. He seems to like the early morning before the sun really gets up there because he says that he wants the star to wake him early so he can see the freshening dew and the pensive Pleasures sweet. He is making his connection to nature here because he is saying that without nature he would not get up on time to tend to the sheep. He would also miss the scents and sights of early morning in nature before the sun gets hot. He make another plea that when he cant work be mine the hut that from the mountains side views wild, and swelling floods, and hamlets brown, and dim-discovered spires because he still wants to experience nature at all times. Even if he cant be outside in it he wants to at least be able to witness it. He is begging here for nature to allow him to see it everyday.
